WELCOME TO GREEN MOUNTAIN HANDBALL
Green Mountain Handball was founded in 2023 with the mission of getting folks outside and experiencing the joy of outdoor handball. While our members come from different sport and court backgrounds, we all share an appreciation for the athleticism and fellowship of what’s referred to as “the perfect game”.
a short history of the GMHA
Looking for handballers or anything to do on a court, co-founder John searches online and finds a Vermont racquetball group on Facebook. He responds to a post from another person who’s primary game is also one-wall handball. John and Fabian connect and never end up playing racquetball.
John and co-founder Fabian play their first games at Burlington’s Leddy Park. The two contrive a rule set that works for the peculiar court dimensions, lines, and walls. Later, they will figure out that the court is pretty close to regulation US Squash singles court specification.
John and Fabian continue to play together for weekend and evening games before going into winter hibernation. They do not communicate in the winter months. John plays a little pickleball with old people at the community center.
John and Fabian reconnect. John lets Fabian know he’s legitimizing this thing with a club name, logo, and website. John also documents the 3.5 wall handball rule set, based loosely on the official USHA one-wall rule set.
The first games of the 2024 season are played. The rule set is expanded upon to incorporate several court idiosyncrasies that were forgotten about over the winter. The site is launched and the GMHA is growing!
The GMHA contacts the City of Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront to ask if they can do some maintenance to the court including repainting the walls and lines and providing the court area a garbage can.
